USDAW Midlands Divisional Conference

The USDAW Midlands Divisional Conference took place on Saturday 5th March and Sunday 6th March at East Midlands Airport.

The conference went really well.

People have said how good it was to have Tom Watson Mp -  Deputy Leader of the Labour Party in attendance.

Tom gave a great speech and answered several question.

During his speech and answers Tom mentioned the following -

USDAW Campaigns are winning Campaigns. Freedom From Fear was the first USDAW Campaign that Tom was involved in.

Sunday Trading is a compromise that gives everyone a bit of what they want.

NHS - Trusts running at a deficit. We need to act now to stop charges for treatment being introduced.

Police - 20% reduction in number of officers due to cuts in spending to the force.

Labour party leader - All Mp's and party members need to get behind the leader.

Labour would repeal all anti trade union laws.

Broadband - all houses should have access to broadband.

Trade union education - Toms own trade union education helped him to get into parliament with the skills he had learnt.

Bus services - there are whole estates that are cut off from local towns ,as they have no bus service.

Alan Fitzpatrick and Jon Tinman - Rowley Dickinson Solicitors did a workshop.

The workshop was an exercise looking at an accident that happened in a fictional work place.

The case study was in separate parts and as you went through each one you had to make a decision on is the case winnable, possible compensation and what evidence you would need.

The different parts got slowly worse for the fictional injured person.

The exercise showed that only with a trade union like USDAW in your workplace, being a member of a trade union like USDAW and having free access to the legal system as part of your USDAW ,membership would you be able to get justice for an accident or injury at work.

John Hannett the USDAW General Secretary gave a great speech and this went down well with all those in attendance.

John explained that the union are fully supporting the Leader of the Labour party.

John spoke about the increase to subs which will be put forward at ADM next month.

John then went on to present several certificates for those people present who had been nominated for an USDAW Organising Award.

This is just a brief summary of the conference.
